We absolutely love a classic British seaside day out, but finding actual golden sand in Kent that doesn’t cost a fortune can be a bit of a nightmare.
Most of the coast down here is pure shingle, which isn’t great for sitting on. That is exactly why we packed up the car and headed down to Folkestone Sunny Sands.
It is a proper, soft-sand beach tucked right next to the historic harbour.
In this guide, we are going to share how we managed to visit this stunning spot on a shoestring budget, including where to park for cheap and how to avoid the worst tourist price traps.
3. How to Get There
By Car (Our Preferred Route)
We took the M20 straight down to Junction 13, following the A20 right into Folkestone which took us about an hour and twenty minutes from the Greenwich area.
Parking right by the beach at the Harbour Car Park is incredibly convenient, but it will cost you a painful £4 an hour during peak season.
Instead, we recommend parking a 10-minute walk away at the Tram Road Car Park, or checking the residential streets up near the East Cliff Pavilion where you can often find free all-day spaces if you arrive before 9:30 AM.
By Train
If you prefer to let someone else do the driving, High Speed trains run directly from London St Pancras to Folkestone Central.

By Bus or Local Transport
Stagecoach operates regular local buses, including the 102 Wave service which connects Folkestone to Dover and Rye.
4. Food & Drink
Food by the coast can easily double the cost of your day, but we found plenty of ways to keep things cheap.
Since we drove down, we brought our big cooler box loaded up with homemade rolls, fruit bags, and a couple of flasks of hot tea to enjoy right on the sand. Do remember to bring your own sand-proof beach blanket and beach parasol if you have one, it may cost you the same price (or even more!) if you need to rent one at the beach!
If you want to buy something hot, skip the pricey seafood stalls right on the harbour arm and head one street back into the Creative Quarter.
You will find brilliant local bakeries and traditional fish and chip shops here where a massive portion of chips to share costs.
5. Clean & Affordable Activities

Unlike the pebbles at nearby Dover or Hythe, the sand here is incredibly fine and perfect for sculpting. We brought our own buckets and spades from home to save paying premium seafront shop prices, and spent hours just relaxing on the beach.

You don’t need to spend a penny to see world-class art here. Folkestone is home to the UK’s largest urban outdoor art exhibition, and several massive sculptures are located right on the beach and the adjacent boardwalk.
Exploring the Folkestone Harbour Arm and Pier
Just a two-minute walk from the sand is the restored railway pier. While the trendy food stalls here can be pricey, walking the pier to look out over the English Channel is completely free and offers amazing views on a clear day.

7. When to Visit
Summer is obviously the prime time for swimming, but the beach gets absolutely packed out on sunny weekends.
We personally prefer visiting during late spring or early autumn.
The weather is often still warm enough for a paddle, but the crowds disappear and the local council car parks switch over to cheaper winter rates.
8. Local Tips & Insider Notes
- Watch the Tide: This is our most critical warning. Sunny Sands completely disappears at high tide, leaving nothing but water hitting the stone walls. Always check the local tide tables online before you set off so you actually get some sand to sit on.
- Toilets: Public toilets are located right at the back of the beach near the safe harbour structure, so you won’t need to wander far.
- Shower: There are only a few public shower heads (with cold water), so be prepared to queue for washing, especially in Summer
- Dog Rules: There is a strict seasonal dog ban on Sunny Sands from 1st May to 30th September. If you have a pup, take them to the pebbly East Cliff beach just around the corner instead.
