The Most Cost Effective way to travel around in London. Tap to Save!

Planning a trip to London? Getting around is a breeze, but choosing the right ticket can be a bit of a maze! Forget fiddly paper tickets and confusing Travelcards—for most visitors, the secret to easy and affordable travel lies in one simple word: Contactless.

Here is the essential, money-saving guide to mastering the London Tube, buses, and trains.

💳 The #1 London Travel Hack: Contactless with Daily Capping

If you have a contactless debit or credit card or use a payment app on your phone or smartwatch (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.), you are already holding your best London travel ticket.

What is Daily Capping?

The most beautiful thing about using contactless payment on London’s transport system (TfL) is the daily cap.

  • Pay-As-You-Go Magic: You are charged for each journey you make.
  • The Limit: The daily cap is the maximum amount you will be charged in one day (from 04:30 to 04:29 the next morning), no matter how many journeys you take across the zones you travel in.
  • Cheaper than a Day Travelcard: For most itineraries, the contactless daily cap is cheaper than buying a paper Day Travelcard.

The Golden Rule: Always use the same card or device to touch in at the start of your journey and touch out at the end. On buses and trams, you only need to touch in. If you use your phone to touch in and your physical card to touch out, the system sees them as two separate accounts, and you won’t get the cap!

💰 Tip for International Visitors: While contactless is best, check with your bank about foreign transaction fees! If they are high, consider getting a standard Oyster card (£7 fee), which also benefits from the same daily caps, and loading it with pay-as-you-go credit.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family Travel: Free and Discounted Fares for Kids

London is incredibly family-friendly when it comes to travel fares. Don’t pay full price for your kids!

Under 11s: Mostly FREE!

Children under 11 years old can travel for free on most services, provided they are accompanied by a fare-paying adult.

  • Buses and Trams: Free travel at all times, no ticket or adult needed.
  • Tube, DLR, London Overground, and Elizabeth Line: Up to four children under 11 can travel free with one fare-paying adult. Simply use the wide gates and have the children walk through with you.

🔥 The Ultimate UK Resident Perk: The 11-15 Zip Oyster Photocard

If you are a UK resident with children aged 11 to 15, the 11-15 Zip Oyster Photocard is absolutely essential and provides the biggest saving:

  • Free Bus & Tram Travel: The photocard grants children free travel on all London buses and trams at all times.
  • Super-Low Daily Cap: On the Tube, DLR, and other rail services, the card charges a child rate (50% off adult fares) but, most importantly, applies an extremely low daily cap.
    • Zone 1-2 Daily Cap (Off-Peak): Currently, this cap is as low as £1.90! If your child travels extensively across Zones 1 and 2 after 9:30 AM (or all day on weekends), that is the most they will pay.
    • Zone 1-6 Daily Cap (Off-Peak): Even travelling as far as Zone 6 (e.g., to Heathrow), the off-peak daily cap is just around £8.15—a fraction of the adult fare.

Getting the Zip Card: The Zip Photocard requires an online application and an administration fee, making it impractical for short-term visitors but a must-have for anyone living in or frequently visiting the capital.

Discount for Short-Term Visitors (Ages 11-15)

If you are just visiting for a few days, don’t worry about the Zip card!

  • Instead, buy an adult Oyster card for each child and ask a member of staff at any Tube station, Visitor Centre, or National Rail ticket office to apply the Young Visitor Discount.
  • This discount gives them 50% off the adult Pay-As-You-Go fares and half the adult daily cap for up to 14 days.
